This course introduces a range of different theories of computation and technology, each from a different practical, historical or philosophical point of view. It is intended to provide a framework in which INNOCHAIN ESRs will be asked to consider their own position with respect to technology at a high level, and reflect upon this in the context of the coursework, a written essay, in the weeks following the lectures.

A series of ten lectures by ten different academics will be presented over two days at the Bartlett School of Architecture, to provide an overview of the breadth of the field. Scheduled speakers include:

This immediately follows the Symposium on Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design (SimAUD), which participants are also invited to attend, in which approximately 30 research papers will present current work in simulation and computation in design.

With this background, students are asked to complete a coursework element consisting of a written essay, in which participants reflect on a particular aspect of the theory of technology and their own work in Innochain. This is also intended to link the theme of the Innochain work package in which the student is embedded with the two other work packages by answering three interrelated questions:
a) How does your work challenge the existing discourse in how design is communicated?
b) How does your work challenge the existing discourse in how simulation is used in design?
c) How does your work challenge the existing discourse in how design is materialised?

The coursework is due on 23 June, with the intent that students may make use of the subsequent INNOCHAIN Transfer Skills Course on Academic Writing, at KTH Stockholm School of Architecture from 7–10 June, to help them in composing their essay.
