Bend&Block
Bend&Block is a material system whose deformation depends on internal geometrical configurations. The aim is to create a structural system that is flexible when it is flat and stiff when it is deformed. This way, curved elements can be easily formed from flat components which bend and block at a predefined configuration, eliminating the need of molds and minimizing the transportation space, which eventually reduces the construction cost. Once installed, the system can be reverted back to its original flat shape by releasing the applied constraints. This constitutes it ideal for transformable structures like temporary settlements.
Bend&Block is a research through design which aims to merge computational processes, material experimentation, and digital fabrication techniques. Such multidisciplinary approaches, that merge engineering with design, can lead to innovative solutions and eventually to a sustainable future of the construction industry.
