Based on waste percentage, this algorithm finds the most suitable blank topology for a given free form glue-laminated timber beam.
Five different typologies are identified: straight, single curved arc, single curved, double curved and double curved with torsion.
Each beam can be segmented based on local curvature and/or torsion. The resulted segments can then be analyzed in order to find the most suitable corresponding blank.
This research is based on the methods used at designtoproduction for geometrical rationalization of large scale timber architectural projects.
