Description:

The field of structural engineering focuses on preventing large deformations in order to create a safe built environment, which results in rigid, non adaptive structures. On the contrary, natural environment has been self-organized by natural forces applied to materials and structures, allowing evolution and adaptation. This research aims to create material systems of controlled deformations, actuated by natural forces, with the objective to create passive, self-organized structures. Thus, high energy demands and maintenance of electromechanical equipment needed for current shape-shifting, adaptive structures, can be eliminated. More specifically the research focuses on simulating controlled, dynamic, bending-active elements combining structural performances and material behaviors. As a result, multiscalar hierarchical systems are generated and materialized through computation and digital fabrication.
